MISSION STATEMENT

The German Music Database (GMDB) website will develop an online archive containing information about many aspects of German music. The primary goal is to build up a large database that allows a person to search and cross-reference a number of categories. Some of these would include band name, album name, and song name; and may also include more specific details like band manager, producer, and album cover artist. The secondary goal for the GMDB will be to help German bands. It will give old and new German bands information about recording studios, promotion agencies, distributors, and booking agencies.

How will such a large amount of information be put together? The GMDB will first focus on the German speaking bands that have been the most successful within the past ten years. All of the information related to these bands will be added to the GMDB database during the first phase of the website. Once most of this information has been added, the website will expand to include additional active bands and musicians. Older bands that are no longer active will also be added to the database at this time.

There will be some other features that the website will offer. First, in order to gain new German music supporters who do not know about German bands, there could be a feature that allows a person to enter an Internationally known band name and search for a German band that is similar. There will also be an online forum where registered users can discuss music and ask any questions that the website may not answer. Next, the website will be accessible to the largest number of people by using the English language. A German version of the website might also be available in the future if good translators are accessible. Finally, if there is enough web space and demand, the GMDB may also make free e-mail addresses and web space available to small German bands who cannot afford it. This way, people will get a better chance to learn even more about these bands.

In general, the German Music Database website will have a great volume of knowledge about German music available to the online community. It may take some time to collect all of the required information, but there is no doubt that it will help German music come into the spotlight and become more widely appreciated.
CATEGORIES

This is a revised list of how the database information will be organized. There are 5 major categories: bands, releases, persons, songs, and companies, each with several attributes listed under each. These attributes describe the type of information we are going to be collecting in the database, and in turn describe the types of information that will be displayed.
