28 April 2006 - GMBD.org is in hibernation, but not dead
The German Music Database project has been delayed significantly due to the fact that one of our major collaborators has been unavailable for about a year now. His contribution to GMDB was the development of the database structure itself, which was to be the backbone of this website. Despite these delays, GMDB has not been forgotten. In fact, the site will continue to be developed in the future, and the database will be constructed when we have more time and resources.
This downtime has not been wasted, either. The creators of GMDB have been slowly developing a new project which has the goal of promoting a select group of German bands we are in contact with, through a collective website, forum, shop, and freelance promotion service. The basic idea is to stimulate American interest in new German bands. GMDB may also be combined with this new website sometime in the future. For more information regarding this new project, please read the message now located on Germaniac.com.
13 April 2005 - Major GMDB updates imminent
GMDB has gotten several minor updates during the past few months, but these were not reported here in the news because they were just small changes. However, a major update is imminent and will expand GMDB's usefulness greatly. The most significant changes will be the addition of a Music News page and an Articles page, as well as a modified website layout and colors. Other changes will include a new About Us page and updates to various existing pages.
A minor update on the database itself: Progress has been slow due to outside obligations, but should increase in about one month.
04 December 2004 - Planning for the database has begun
We have recently embarked upon the task of planning how the database will be organized. The categories listed at the bottom of the Mission page have been expanded and re-arranged, and the new organizational structure is looking much more like something we can work with. This also allows us to begin collecting some data, now that we know exactly what types of information we need, and we can quickly add it in to the database once it is operational in the future. The new categories will be listed here when they are finalized.
09 September 2004 - 2 new sections added
Two new sections have been added, as you can see in the menu. The Organizations sections lists some websites and other organizations that have been established to help promote German music throughout the world. The Labels section lists several record labels which release German music outside of Europe. Both new sections will grow as more information is gathered and more people contribute to GMDB.
More definitions have also been added.
06 September 2004 - GMDB redesigned
The new GMDB.org design has been implemented much earlier than expected. Now there is a bit of color which the old version severely lacked, as well as a new logo. Now it's time to add new content...
05 September 2004 - More stores added
There are now many more websites listed where you can buy German music. A list of real stores across the country has also been started with the hope that someone people living near these stores or visiting the area can buy some music there too. As usual, you are urged to help expand the list and let us know if you know about any additional websites or stores that sell German music.
GMDB.org will also get a makeover soon. The colors are rather bland and un-exciting, so we have created a new design which will be implemented sometime within the next few weeks. You can view the first "test" page online here. If you have any problems viewing this page, please let us know so that we can alleviate any problems when the entire website starts using this new design.
23 April 2004 - GMDB reorganized
GMDB.org has been slightly reorganized for better management, but you should not notice any major changes in the website's functionality. It should remain the same for the most part.
4 April 2004 - Music related definitions are now available
There is often a lot of confusion when it comes to defining what something is, especially when you consider all the names a piece of music can have. Maxi, Digipack, EP, LP, SACD, Super Jewel Case, MCD... What are all of these things? Well now you can learn for yourself what exactly all of these things mean. The definitons have begun, and will be continually updated as needed. Read the definitions.
A list of online music stores that sell German music have also been put online in the past months. There is a description of each including shipping information and people's opinions, and more to come. This should make the process of buying music online a little bit easier.
30 January 2004 - GMDB.org registered
One major thing that any website needs is a domain name, and now the German Music Database has it's own. GMDB.org will be only one of several domain names that will go to the database when it is completed.
Work on the website is beginning, and will take place in 2 major phases. The first phase will be a normal website full of general music information and specific ways in which you can improve your search for German music. The second phase will be when the actual database is put online so you can research everything from albums to musicians, record labels to concerts, and much more. The mission statement of GMDB is now online so you can learn more about the details of our goals.
GMDB is established
Very early in 2004, two people came together to discuss the beginnings of GMDB. A general plan has been put together and a formal proposal will be written to help promote the idea of GMDB.
